Sale and leaseback
How it works
The company sells an asset it owns, equipment or a building, to a funder, which immediately leases it back. The company receives the sale price and keeps using the asset as before, paying rent.
The funding rests on the value of the asset rather than on the company’s ratios alone. It is a useful lever to fund growth, an investment, a restructuring or a continuation plan.

Frequently asked questions
How much can be raised?
The amount depends on the asset’s market value, set by an appraisal, and on its liquidity. It can represent a significant share of that value.
Is it possible during insolvency proceedings?
Yes, under conditions: the transaction must fit the framework set by the proceedings or the plan, with the necessary authorisations.
What happens at the end of the lease?
Depending on the contract, the company can buy back the asset, extend the lease or return it.
What should be watched?
Rent level, term, buy-back conditions and accounting and tax treatment, to be validated with your advisers.
